Endourology is a minimally invasive technique available to treat kidney stones. Thin, flexible instruments including lasers, graspers, miniature stone retrieval baskets, special scalpels, and cautery, can be advanced through working channels in the scopes in order to perform surgery without creating any incisions at all. The majority of endouroscopic procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.
ROBOTIC SURGERY
Robotic surgery is a method to perform surgery using very small tools attached to a robotic arm. The surgeon controls the robotic arm with a computer. It’s similar to laparoscopic surgery since, typically, much smaller incisions are needed. The small, precise movements that are possible with this type of surgery give it some advantages over standard endoscopic techniques.
Dr. Movassaghi uses the latest technology to bring cutting edge medicine to our patients. The use of lasers has become increasingly common in urologic surgery. Lasers are used to break-up stones, to destroy tumors in the bladder and other areas of the urologic tract, and also to help shrink the prostate. When used appropriately, laser surgery allows for decreased blood loss, faster recovery and minimal loss of productivity.
HIFU
High-intensity focused ultrasound is a non-invasive technique that uses non-ionizing ultrasonic waves (as opposed to radiation or surgery) to heat tissue. HIFU can increase the flow of blood or lymph and can also destroy tumors. The ultrasound energy is used to target diseased cells in the prostate.
