STD’s are diseases or infections that are spread through intercourse, kissing, oral sex or through sharing of sexual devices. Other than abstinence, condoms are the best means of preventing them. Unfortunately, even condoms are not 100% fail proof. STD’s usually cause genital ulcers, urethral inflammation or no symptoms at all. Oral and genital ulcers are most often cause by herpes simplex, chancroid, syphilis, and lymphogranuloma venereum. Syphilis is called the great imitator as it can mimic many other disorders including neurologic and cardiac diseases. Chlamydia and gonorrhea both cause urethritis (or urine tube inflammation) and a penile discharge. The Human deficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS is spread through blood and sexual fluid. The human papilloma virus (HPV) causes genital warts and is linked to cervical cancer in women and both penile and anal cancer in men. Hepatitis B is usually spread through sexual contact, while Hepatitis C is usually a blood born disease.
